On 16 May 2026, following laboratory confirmation of Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), the WHO Director-General determined that the outbreak constituted a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005). As of 13 June 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported 782 laboratory-confirmed cases and 181 confirmed deaths (case-fatality ratio approximately 23%) across 31 health zones spanning Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, with 6,275 contacts under follow-up. Uganda has reported 19 laboratory-confirmed cases including 2 deaths.
